What is IEEE 1284-1994 standard for serial printers ?


           Put simply, most printer manufacturers, for example, H.P,now actually specify that only an IEEE 1284 compliant printer
           cable must be used with all new printers. The main difference between the cheaper 18 wire cables is that in some cases
           a signal is sent back to the computer registering the ink levels on screen, as in newer EPSON printers for example,
           also these cables have full R.F.I. shielding, that is to say  a full 360 Degrees of wrap around shield of alloy film
           as well as additionally, a special braided wire shield and full connection between the braiding and the metal plugs at
           either end, providing much better R.F.I. shielding, thus resulting in a cleaner, faster, more efficient data signal.
